The Flourishing Life: A Life that Overflows

Reflection Questions

1. What positive difference do you hope to make in the world with your life?

2. In these verses, Jesus describes those who make an impact in the world as being merciful, pure in heart, peacemakers, and joyful through opposition. Reflect on any of these virtues that may be particularly relevant to your life right now:

a. Mercy is moving towards those in need and acting on their behalf. Who might God be calling you to move towards this week?

b. Purity of heart is alignment between what is on the inside and how you present yourself in the world. Where might you need to seek greater alignment?

c. True peace, as Miroslav Volf says, requires that "the truth about the world is told and justice is done." Is there a conflict where God is calling you to respond in this way?

d. Rejoicing in the midst of opposition points to the worth of the treasure we have in Christ. Would the way that you respond to opposition make someone want what you have in Christ?

3. What motivations have been helpful to you as you have sought to make an impact on the world around you? How have you lost motivation when things were difficult?

4. In summary, we said that the love of Jesus flowing through us gives us what we need to impact the world. How do you experience the love of Jesus towards you right now? How might that make a difference this week in how you interact with the world?

Matthew 5:7-12

7 “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.

8 “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.

9 “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.

10 “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

11 “Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. 12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
